When we are asked where we come from, most of us start telling a story. The story of how we experienced life from the moment we have memories. And even before – which would mean that we tell stories that someone else has told us about ourselves and our first years of life because we don’t remember.
Â
Some of these stories are filled with happy memories of our childhood and our family. Other stories are about suffering, unfulfilled needs, being misunderstood, not being seen, not being loved, being abused or disrespected, and much more.
Â
Through continuously repeating our stories (to others and especially to ourselves), we intensify their power, create patterns and habits, and lock ourselves in the cage of our past without being aware of it. Sitting in this very cage, we create new stories about our present and future, stories that will never really allow us to leave the prison.
Â
Whatever we experienced was our reality – our reality at that time. But was it the truth? Today, we are no longer toddlers or teenagers. We have grown up, and we have the possibility to look back at our realities and find our own truth.
Â
And we can rewrite our stories.
Let the journey begin.
